professional when it comes to sports

INTERVIEW

Why don’t you tell us why you decided to open a shop?
In the GDR I was a competitive handball player and after my studies I became a sports teacher. Until the fall of the Wall, I worked as a district coach. I wrote training plans and took care of the purchase of sports materials. That was the end in 1990.
I didn’t want to work as a coach any longer, the insecurity in the coaching job, constant changes – and besides, I wanted to stay in Forst (Lausitz). During my first visits to the West, I was interested in the sports shops, I almost only looked at sports shops – and said to myself, that’s what you do now. Against all odds, I then went through with it and set up my own business.

When did you open the shop?
I registered the business on 1 December 1990. We opened the shop on 4 July 1991.

So next year you will celebrate your 30th anniversary.
Yes, I would like to start a 30-year campaign then.

Have you ever regretted your decision during the 30 years?
Sure, there are days that don’t go so well, but all in all, I haven’t regretted my decision at the time.

What is your core business?
Over the years, I have built up a very good reputation in the field of ski equipment and ski service. I offer downhill skis and cross-country skis, both for sale and for hire. Of course, boots and poles are included. The rental is ideal for those who always want to glide down the slopes on the latest models.
If your skis need a fine-tuning before your winter holiday, you’ve also come to the right place.
Otherwise, there is sports clothing and footwear for almost all areas, hikers will find what they need for the mountain tour. There is hardly a sport for which I don’t have the right item.

Who are your customers?
I have many regular customers who have enjoyed coming to me from the very beginning. Children who want to get kitted out for school sports and then again people in their 30s and 35s who want to try things out on the spot.

Did you want to move the business away from Forst in the meantime?
I want to grow old in Forst, that was one of the reasons why I came back to Forst in 1982. I feel good in Forst and I don’t think the business would be better in another town.

What would you like to see in Forst?
It would be nice if the town’s retailers were given a chance. Many retailers have a wonderful offer. People should look at that first before going somewhere else.
